Q & A: Destiny & Karma
November 15th, 2007 by John Wolfe
Question: When considering the teachings that are found in films like What the Bleep Do We Know and The Secret, where does destiny fit in, or does it?
Answer: That’s an excellent question. For anyone that’s unfamiliar with The Secret and What the Bleep Do We Know
; both films teach that we are entirely responsible for every single outcome within our own lives. Nothing is being done unto us without our drawing it in. Both impart this truly life changing information through different means and methods; however the message of both boils down to our reality being a reflection upon our primary intentions, thoughts, emotions and the resulting actions we take based upon these.
When we approach life in a strictly subjective manner, it would appear that there’s little room for destiny. Yet, there are occurrences such as precognitive visions and psychic foretelling of future events that appear to contradict the idea of a subjective reality. These forms of phenomena seem to point to a destiny of sorts that many seers are capable of tuning into. So is it one way or the other? Do we have complete control over every aspect of our lives or are we still unwitting pawns to some extent?
I believe our reality may be comprised of both the element of subjective influence and that of destiny. There’s absolutely no question in my mind that we are responsible for the events that enter into our lives. I’ve seen it played out on many occasions within my own life.
I will admit there are certain occurrences, which line up in such a way, that to suggest they were anything but destined seems impossible and improbable. I don’t believe that destiny and a subjective reality have to be mutually exclusive. It’s possible that both work completely synergistically.
As we find ourselves in prolonged states of habitually thinking and feeling a thought, along with its strong emotional counterpart, we are setting the wheels in motion for a possible manifestation. If this manifestation takes time to come to its full fruition then would it be safe to say that our thoughts (and the actions we took alongside those thoughts) put us on a course that was destined to be? I believe that destiny and subjective reality are a lot like the chicken and the egg. Which came first? I like to think that emotionally charged thought always comes first. As long as it is heavily concentrated upon for long periods of time then destiny is capable of “taking over.”
Now what about some psychics and seers abilities to foretell the future? It’s quite possible that they are not seeing a destiny which exists separate from man/woman’s intentions and influence. They may be picking up on the heavily emotionally charged thoughts that have been in the process of coming to full physical manifestation.
They are sensing these in one form or another and are able to discern that an event or circumstance will soon occur. If we view destiny in this manner, it’s easy to see the power of our own mind still controlling and shaping our reality; both on the individual micro level and the large whole of the macrocosm. I don’t believe the teachings found in The Secret and What the Bleep contradicts the idea of destiny. However, these films do require us to re-examine our beliefs concerning an objective form of it.
Question: Can you talk a little more about your beliefs regarding karma in a single lifetime and the karmic debt that may spread across multiple lifetimes?
Answer: I personally have a difficult time with the idea of karmic debt as it applies to reincarnation. The concept of owing someone something because of an event that happened a lifetime ago (or two or three) seems like a pretty messy way to run a Universe. I feel that karmic debt is nothing more than the new age version of sin.
I like this question though because it ties in extremely well to the one above about destiny. If we’re responsible for creating and shaping every aspect of our own lives, then we could say that the entity which humankind refers to as god bestowed upon us its same ability to create. For all intents and purposes we are god in human form.
If someone chooses to feel guilt and a constant obligation toward others during the course of their lifetime, then it may in fact be possible to carry some of that into the afterlife and beyond. However, I don’t believe that’s a necessary thing- remember we’re the ones responsible for doing it all. I mentioned the teachings of Abraham, through Esther Hicks, in a previous post. One of my favorite Abraham quotes is: “You are so free you have the ability to choose bondage if you so desire.”
To believe in things like sin and karmic debt, in my opinion, is to limit one’s self and literally choose bondage. Then again, we are free to create however we choose, so if that is someone’s desire, then that’s alright too. But, it seems like an awful waste of one’s abilities.
Now I do believe in karma as it applies to the law of attraction. Even so, I still don’t think the law of attraction is serving up some form of payback in a way that is separate from the individual’s point of awareness. Again, we are responsible for doing it all. Karma under these conditions is the Universe mirroring an individual’s inner thoughts and beliefs right back to them. It’s not happening because they are a horrible person and the Universe is out to get revenge. If they would work towards changing their primary feelings and thoughts the Universe would then change the reflection it’s providing for them. It’s really an impartial process outside of our own personal condemnation.
I like to think of life and the Universe as a giant lake. Our actual self is standing on the shore looking in. The reflections that we call our reality are provided at the water’s edge. They only serve to mimic and mirror our deepest ideas, beliefs and expectations. What we are seeing is not the lake’s fault. If we don’t like what’s staring back at us, it’s our responsibility to change those ideas, beliefs and expectations.
And that does it for this question and answer installment. I would like to thank both of the individuals that sent in these great questions.
