Adam,

Thank you for reading this entry and for sharing your experiences. The decision of allowing ourselves to be a victim or a champion is one that replays itself throughout our lives. It seems, whichever we were more prone to gravitating toward, early on, determines our mindset as adults. If we were prone to feeling like a victim, then we naturally become knee jerk, reactors instead of taking the initially uncertain action of a champion. Changing from the victim mentality takes that conscious effort and decision.

I'm glad to hear you are listening to your own inner calling. So often, people are concerned about what will happen to them or their family (and rightfully so) if they don't stick with what they're accustomed to, even if they are miserable in doing it. However, I think someone such as yourself is setting a far better example by following that which fulfills you.

Even if times are lean for a while, you will have shown your family the importance of not stifling their passion and dreams just to do something "safe" or "acceptable", all the while sacrificing or subduing their true feelings. I've come to the conclusion that I can handle lean times far better than I can doing something outside my purpose or passion. When we take purposeful, fulfilling action, whether in our daily interactions or our career, we are truly living what I feel life was meant to be. We are thriving instead of surviving.

All the best to you and your family, Adam!

Once again John, your article precisely describes the situation I find myself in after what can only be described as a life-changing and traumatic 2008. I too am weighing up the options and (to the dismay of some) resisting the easy, familiar, path infavour of the path I feel will truly enrich my life and that of my family. I remember a passage from The Alchemist where the main character, a young boy, is robbed and finds himself in a country where he doesn't speak the language and with no money. What is he to do? He decides he can be one of two things: either a victim of robbery or someone on the start of a great new adventure. He chose the second and so have I. Thanks again John for sharing your wonderful insights.
